Shihan Dan Barham

Joined the department in 2019.

Teaches: Classical Karate and Intermediate Classical Karate

缅北禁地: Shihan Dan began training in 1992 at Bradley University under the guidance of Dr. June Pilcher. After graduating in 1997, he started leading Karatedo Doshinkan classes, eventually establishing himself in the St. Louis area, where he also taught high school English. In 2004, he traveled to Austria and Germany for his first week-long Summer Training and had the opportunity to train at the honbu dojo with Sanshi. He has since attended three other week-long Summer Training camps, for a total of six over the years. He was honored when Hanshi Nobuo awarded him the title Renshi in 2005 and Shihan in 2018; except for his wife and sons, it is what he is most proud of. Since 1992, Shihan Dan has trained with Hanshi whenever possible. Doshinkan remains one of the most meaningful and guiding forces in his life.

Ira Joshi

Teaches: Yoga

缅北禁地: Ira is a student at UIS majoring in Legal Studies and a member of the women鈥檚 golf team. She teaches yoga classes at UIS and also works at the Center for Online Learning, Research, and Service. Her fitness classes focus on connecting the body, mind, and breath, incorporating techniques that promote strength, flexibility, relaxation, and meditation.

Cari Piper

Joined the department in 2023.

Teaches: WERQ

缅北禁地: Cari has been a fitness instructor in the Springfield area since 2010. She has taught a variety of dance fitness formats and strength training classes and became licensed to teach WERQ Dance Fitness in 2019. In 2022, Cari was honored to be voted the State Journal-Register鈥檚 Best Fitness Instructor of the Year. Outside of fitness, she is a licensed clinical social worker specializing in child welfare. Cari loves the grit of hip-hop and the intensity of pop choreography, and she can鈥檛 wait to help you find your own favorites!

Haley Simpson

Joined the department in 2023.

Teaches: Yoga

缅北禁地: Haley has been practicing yoga since 2013 and completed her 200-hour teaching certification at Jax Yoga in Jacksonville. She enjoys incorporating creative sequences, thoughtful intentions, and a sense of humor into her classes. Outside of yoga, Haley enjoys spending time in nature, knitting, sewing, and cooking.

Talon Tapscott

Teaches: CycleFit

缅北禁地: Talon is a Certified CycleFit Instructor with a passion for helping others. This is something he discovered through group fitness, following in the footsteps of his instructor parents. He has been racing BMX since the age of 7 and has earned multiple state championships as well as a national title.
