The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance invites us to honor the lives lost and the heroes who answered the call on September 11th by uniting in acts of kindness and service. Born from the vision of David Paine and Jay Winuk—whose brother Glenn, an attorney and volunteer firefighter, was killed while responding at the World Trade Center—this day transforms tragedy into a movement for good.

We’ll gather to support Operation: Care and Comfort, continuing their mission to provide essential support and comfort to our service members. Together, we’ll stand behind those who protect our nation and show that even in the face of loss, compassion can prevail. Join us and help make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who sacrifice so much for our freedom as we make care kits and notes of encouragement for our current military troops.

Join us on Thursday, September 11, in the Student Union Ballroom. All UIS students, faculty and staff are invited to be a part of this memorable event. Volunteers are need in 30 minute shifts. Walk ins are welcome.

The call to active duty presents an extreme hardship upon students. In an effort to assist those students who are called to active duty, the campus has established the following policy.

Students who are called into active military duty during the course of an academic term, including the National Guard and Reserve active duty, will receive refunds and course credits as follows:

Departure during the first fifteen calendar days after classes have begun for the term:

Grades and Credit: No course credit or grades will be given.
Registration will be shown on UIS records but not on transcripts. Pursuant to normal University policy, students who withdraw from courses do not receive course credit.
Charges: Tuition, fees, and student health insurance premium will be refunded in full. Applicable housing charges including cancellation fees will be waived and refunded.

Departure after the fifteenth day but before mid-term:

Grades and Credit: No course credit or grades will be given.
Registration will be shown on UIS records but not on transcripts. Pursuant to normal University policy, students who withdraw from courses do not receive course credit.
Charges: Tuition and fees will be refunded in full. Applicable housing charges including cancellation fees will be waived and refunded. The refund of student health insurance premiums will be determined by the insurance company.

Departure after mid-term through the twelfth week of the semester:

Grades and Credit: Students will either be withdrawn or take an incomplete in all courses in progress at the time of departure as follows:

Prior to departure, the student may withdraw from all courses. No course credit or grades will be given. Pursuant to normal University policy, students who withdraw from courses do not receive course credit.
Prior to departure, the student may take an incomplete for all courses. An incomplete due to military call-up (DFR grade) will appear on the student’s records and academic transcript. The student must complete the course by the end of the second semester after the return from active duty.
If the student does not make a decision prior to departure, all courses will be recorded as incomplete. Upon return from active duty the student must either withdraw from all courses or complete the courses by the end of the second semester after the return from active duty.
Charges: For students who withdraw, tuition and fees will be refunded in full. For students who take an incomplete for all courses, tuition and fees will not be refunded. Applicable housing charges including cancellation fees will be waived and refunded. The refund of student health insurance premium will be determined by the insurance company.

Departure after the twelfth week through the end of the semester:

Grades, Credit and Charges: Students will have the option to do the following:

Withdraw with a full refund of tuition and fees
Take an incomplete
Receive credit for the course.

Credit for undergraduate students may take the form of a letter grade or grade of CR for each course in which they have attained a grade of C or better at the time of withdrawal, as determined by the faculty member.

Credit for graduate students may take the form of a letter grade or grade of CR for each course in which they have attained a grade of B or better at the time of withdrawal, as determined by the faculty member.

Additional Notes

Students receiving financial aid will have tuition and housing refunds applied to the financial aid programs from which funds were awarded according to guidelines established by federal and state financial aid regulations. Students should consult with Financial Assistance concerning the impact of military call-up on financial aid conditions and eligibility.
Students enrolled in irregular term courses will be treated in a manner consistent with the policies outlined above.
Students who are called to active duty will not be subject to Financial Assistance and/or academic satisfactory progress standards for the withdrawal term.
Textbooks in good condition which were purchased during the semester in which call-up occurs will be repurchased prior to departure by the Bookstore at the prices paid by the student.
Students called to active duty may receive a full refund on parking hang tags if the hang tag is presented to Parking Operations prior to departure.
Appeals of actions under this policy may be filed with the Registrar. All appeal time frames established by UIS (e.g., housing policy, parking tickets, library fines, etc.) will be held in abeyance during the period of active duty.
Students who have chosen to withdraw from their course or courses due to military leave have the right to request priority registration during a subsequent term for the course or courses from which they have withdrawn.

Academic Advising and Support

Advising

Any student under 30 credit hours earned (generally incoming freshman or first-year students) will be assigned an advisor by the Office of Advising Services. Information regarding the assignment of advisors can be found on the Advising Services website.

If you need further assistance you can contact Office of Advising Services at at 217-206-7471/advising@uis.edu.

Once you reach 30 credit hours, you will be assigned an academic advisor from the department of your chosen major. You can find your advisor using the Find Your Advisor Application or by going to the Academics tab in the My UIS Student Portal.

Degree Audit System (DARS)

Using DARS, students can access a Degree Audit Report. This report is an unofficial audit of degree progress and includes all completed courses, as well as those currently in progress. The Learning Hub

The Learning Hub offers free academic support services to currently enrolled UIS students both both in-person and online—in writing, math, accounting, economics, science, computer science, and academic skills as well as supplemental instruction; online, on-ground, and in-class workshops; walk-in assistance; and additional support materials.

Prior Learning Assessment/Credit for Prior Learning

The IPL 305 (Undergraduate) and IPL 501 (Graduate) courses , also referred to as the Prior Learning Assessment program, are designed to provide a way for students to present evidence that they should earn college credit for learning experiences (military or otherwise) outside of UIS. Students in the course create a portfolio reflecting on their prior experiences.

Upon completing the course, you may be eligible to complete additional portfolios, earning up to 16 credits to be applied to Engaged Citizenship Common Experience (ECCE) requirements or General Electives.

Enrollment in IPL 305 or 501 requires the completion of the Prior Learning Course Application (PDF). It is important to note that some departments have specific requirements related to ECCE and IPL. Prior to enrolling in either of these courses, be sure to contact your department/advisor as well as the IPL Office to confirm that this is appropriate for you.

Advise U

Advise U was launched in Fall 2020 to assist students for educational success.

Brookens Library provides access to over 750,000 books and serials. Beyond resource access, the library provides research support, has a range of items besides books that you can check out, provides space for quiet study and group study, and offers printing, scanning and copying services.

Military and Veterans Lounge

The Military and Veterans Lounge is a physical space on campus designated for use by our military-connected, active duty, and veteran students. The lounge is located in University Hall (UHB) 1002 (main level near the ID Center) and is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but if you see the door opened after hours, feel welcomed to come in. Also feel free to use this space to study, get free coffee and snacks, print or scan homework or other documents, relax before or after classes, and possibly to run into some other student veterans.

The Office of Disability Services ensures students with documented disabilities receive the academic accommodations needed for their success in the classroom. National Guard Grant

Program Information

If you are a member of the �山�� National Guard, you may be eligible to receive the �山�� National Guard (ING) Grant. This grant can pay for eligible tuition and certain fees (i.e., registration, graduation, general activity, matriculation and term fees) for undergraduate or graduate study. Benefits are limited to use only at �山�� 2- or 4-year public colleges as follows:

If you have completed less than ten years of active duty ING service, your grant can be used for a maximum of the equivalent of four academic years of full-time enrollment.
Once you have completed ten years or more of active duty ING service, your grant can be used for a maximum of the equivalent of six academic years of full-time enrollment (note that the six-year maximum eligibility is cumulative, and includes benefits received when you had less than ten years of service).

Application Process

To apply for a National Guard Grant Scholarship, the applicant must be on active duty status and have served for at least one year in the �山�� National Guard. Enlisted persons currently serving and company grade officers are eligible. Time served in other branches of the U.S. Armed forces does not count toward this requirement. The application can be obtained from the ISAC web site at www.collegezone.com and from your unit. You may also obtain this form in the Office of Financial Assistance. The applicant must apply to the �山�� Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) for these educational benefits and must supply all requested information. In order to receive benefits, your application must be submitted by the deadline dates listed below. Applications are renewed each academic year, which begins with the fall term and concludes the following summer term. No payments will be made on behalf of any eligible student unless a current application is on file. Listed are the deadline dates for submission of the application for the National Guard Grant program:

Spring semester: March 1
Summer semester: June 15

Payments are made to only one institution per term. If the applicant enrolls at a second institution for the same term, he/or she must arrange for payment through the college of record. However, the college of record is not required to bill ISAC for charges incurred at another institution.
The University of �山�� at Springfield will submit payment information to ISAC for you.

University Requirements

The applicant will be required to submit the eligibility letter to the Office of Financial Assistance, along with a Request for Benefits Form [PDF] after registering for classes. The Request for Benefits Form can also be picked up in the Office of Financial Assistance located in UHB 1015.

Additional Information

You can be enrolled in both the NG and Ch 1606 programs at the same time. Also, you may be enrolled in NG and Ch 30 benefits if you served on active duty prior to enlisting in the National Guard. The applicant must notify ISAC in writing of name, address, or college choice as they occur. All college changes must be received by ISAC before the deadline dates to be effective for the appropriate term (s).

ISAC Full Benefit Description

�山�� Veterans Grant

Program Information

If you have served at least one year of federal active duty service in the Armed Forces of the United States; or served on federal active duty service in a foreign country during a time of hostilities in that country and were honorably discharged after each period of federal active duty service; and/or are honorably serving** you may be eligible for the �山�� Veteran Grant (IVG) Program. Any member of the �山�� National Guard or a Reserve component of the Armed Forces of the United States who meets the eligibility requirements is considered a qualified applicant for the IVG Program. Qualified applicants are encouraged to submit an IVG Program application if they anticipate attending college at any point in the future. While program eligibility can be confirmed for qualified applicants at any time, funds will be disbursed only for terms in which you are enrolled at an �山�� public college or community college.

Application Process

To obtain your �山�� Veterans Grant (IVG) award, you must complete an application through the �山�� Student Assistance Commission (ISAC). The application can be downloaded through the Web address www.collegezone.com or may be obtained from the Office of Financial Assistance (UHB 1015). Once ISAC has processed the application, they will mail an award letter to the student certifying the amount of eligibility. This award letter must be submitted to the Office of Financial Assistance.

Additional Information

This award can be used for both undergraduate and graduate work. The points will remain on your record and can be used anytime during your educational career. This award can be used in conjunction with the Veteran’s Chapter 30 program, but not with any other state programs. Talk with the Veterans Official at the Office of Financial Assistance for further information on this award.

ISAC Description

MIA/POW SCHOLARSHIP

If you are the dependent of a person who was an �山�� resident at the time he/she entered active duty and has been declared to be a prisoner of war, missing in action, dead as a result of a service-connected disability, or disabled with a 100 percent disability as the result of a service-connected cause as recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs or the U.S. Department of Defense, you may be eligible to receive the MIA/POW Scholarship.

This scholarship may be used at public colleges in �山��, and is administered by the �山�� Department of Veterans' Affairs. You can visit the ISAC web portal to check your eligibility and apply for this scholarship.

Children of Veterans Tuition Waiver

Children of Veterans Tuition Waiver is a four-year (consecutive) tuition waiver at the University of �山��. If you are awarded the waiver, it will cover your in-state tuition (for undergraduate, graduate, or professional studies) at the University of �山�� (Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, Springfield, or Health Sciences Center).

Donor-Funded Institutional Scholarships

In addition to educational benefits, you may qualify for UIS Institutional Scholarships. UIS uses one application form for all institutional scholarships. You are strongly encouraged to complete this form annually. The form becomes available on November 1 and is due by February 15. UIS Military/Veterans Emergency Grant

UIS cares about its student veterans and military personnel, and we know that on occasion difficult situations arise. The UIS Military/Veterans Emergency Grant was created to help prevent emergencies and unforeseen events from inhibiting student veterans’ academic progress.

The awarding of this grant money is not competitive. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received. The maximum disbursement for this grant is $500, and a student may only receive one award per fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

Applicants must be a student veterans, active duty personnel, reservists, or National Guard members.
Applicants must be enrolled and in good standing at UIS during the semester when the emergency funds are awarded.
Applicants must have a financial hardship resulting from an emergency or unforeseen event.
Applicants must have utilized all other eligible aid programs.
Applicants must be enrolled in direct deposit with UIS at the time of the award.
