Join us in celebrating our first-generation students, faculty, and staff at our annual National First-Gen Celebration. The National First-Gen Celebration highlights the importance of the first-generation college student experience. We honor the resilitance and determination to be the first in the family to receive a bachelor's degree. We will start off the celebration with some mingling and getting acquainted, followed by the official launch of our UIS 1st Generation Initiative, and an inspiring keynote presentation by Patti Piotrowski, University Librarian and Dean of Library Instructional Services and proud former first-generation college student.

Join the 2nd year cohort of Necessary Steps LLC each week as we read and discuss Suze Orman's advice to young adults about saving, spending, credit, retirement and planning for big purchases (new car, home). Thi is a required activity of Necessary Steps 2nd year students, but all Necessary Steps alumni (upperclassmen/women and grad students) and 1st Gen students are welcome to attend.

The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke is financial expert Suze Orman's answer to a generation's cry for help. They're called "Generation Debt" and "Generation Broke" by the media — people in their twenties and thirties who graduate college with a mountain of student loan debt and are stuck with one of the weakest job markets in recent history.
