How to Submit an Article to Orbit

Now editors have the option to add articles to Orbit for their employee news and announcements.

You can do so by selecting an option the Orbit news category, and the corresponding subcategory on what type of Orbit article it is:

breaking news: time-sensitive information that is pertinent to all of campus.
campus announcement: share all your departments campus announcements, directly related to employees.
eom: this is to create and share articles related to the employee of the month.

All articles recommended by editors are reviewed by the Office of Marketing and Brand Strategy for alignment to the Orbit purpose and goals.

Once you are ready for your article to be reviewed and published, submit for 'Needs Review' and an email will be sent to the Marketing team for review.

To ensure that the content on Orbit remains relevant and useful for all employees, we have established some guidelines for content submission. Here’s what you need to know.

Content Criteria

To maintain the quality and relevance of the content on Orbit, please ensure that your submissions meet the following criteria:

Targeted to Employees: Content should be relevant and useful to our employees.
Need-to-Know Information: Share information that is essential for employees to know.
Accessibility: Ensure that your content adheres to basic accessibility standards.

Welcomed Content Types

We encourage you to submit the following types of content:

Unit Newsletter Content: Updates and news from different units within the organization.
Employee Events: Information about upcoming events that employees can participate in.
Professional Development Opportunities: Announcements about training sessions, workshops, and other growth opportunities.
Policy/Procedure Changes: Updates on any changes in policies or procedures that affect employees.
Other Need-to-Know Information: Any other information that is important for employees to be aware of.

Approval Notification

If your content is approved, you will receive an automatic email with a link to your posted article.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an Event on Orbit

Are you planning an event and want to share it with your colleagues? Orbit makes it easy for employees to create and promote their own events. Follow these simple steps to list your event on Orbit.

Log In: Start by logging in to the website at uis.edu/login.
Create Content: Once logged in, click on the "Create Content" button.
Select Event: From the options available, select "Event."
Add Event Details:
- Title: Enter a catchy and descriptive title for your event.
- Event Description: Provide a detailed description of your event. Include all the necessary information that attendees need to know.
- Date(s) and Time(s): Enter the date(s) and time(s) for your event.
- Location: Specify the location where the event will take place.
Event Type:
- Under "Event Type," select "Employee" to indicate that this event is for employees.
- You can also select any other categories that further describe your event. To highlight multiple categories, hold down the shift key while selecting.
Hosting Department: Select the department that is hosting the event.
Add Visuals: If you have any visuals, such as images or flyers, add them to help market your event. Visuals can make your event more appealing and informative.
Identify Event Type: Specify whether your event is online, on-campus, other, or a combination of these options.
Save: Once you have filled in all the details, click "Save" to publish your event on Orbit.

Already have an event on the UIS calendar and want to add it to Orbit, too?

If you have already created an event on the UIS calendar, you can amend your calendar listing to add it to Orbit without creating a separate event. Under "Event Type," simply hold down the shift key and select "employee" in addition to any other event types already highlighted. This will make your event appear on Orbit.

The Office of Web and Digital Strategy has added the capability for editors to now submit articles to be published to the Orbit website. The Orbit website is our Internal Communication Hub, meant to improve internal communications and streamline access to resources for employees. Articles appropriate for Orbit should include need-to-know employee information, such as trainings, services for employees, rules and procedural changes/reminders, opportunities for morale and culture-building, etc., to support the goal of Orbit as a central news hub for UIS employees.

How to Subscribe to Department News

UIS employees and students now have the option to Subscribe to Department News. As departments publish news articles to the site, you will receive an email with the article and a link to view online.

If you wish to unsubscribe at anytime, revisit the page and uncheck the department you no longer want to receive the newsletter from, and save.
