Guiding Lights New Faculty Mentoring Program

The Guiding Lights New Faculty Mentoring Program is designed to support new faculty members as they transition into their roles at UIS. The program fosters a sense of belonging, professional growth, and institutional engagement by connecting new faculty with experienced colleagues in a structured, collaborative mentoring environment. All mentors are trained before they are matched with new faculty.

The overarching goals include:

Enhancing faculty retention and satisfaction
Promoting inclusive excellence and equity-minded practices
Encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration
Supporting career development in teaching, scholarship, and service

Group Mentoring Model

Rather than relying solely on one-on-one mentoring, the Guiding Lights program uses a group mentoring approach, which includes:

Mentoring Circles: Small groups of new faculty are paired with senior faculty mentors from diverse disciplines.
Shared Learning: Facilitated discussions on topics such as tenure preparation, work-life balance, inclusive pedagogy, and navigating university systems.
Community Building: Opportunities for networking, peer support, and cross-departmental collaboration.
Faculty-Led Sessions: Senior faculty lead workshops and conversations based on their expertise and experience.

After a successful inaugural event, we're excited to invite you back for another engaging gathering of �山�� educators and thought leaders in online teaching and learning. Our theme, "Doing Less with Less, Effectively," emphasizes innovative strategies for impactful online education within evolving resource constraints.

The free virtual conference on November 7^th, 2025, is for those who learn, teach, develop, support, or administer online education.

Dedicated tracks highlighting insights and strategies from our community college colleagues and staff, whose expertise can greatly benefit all institutions.
Expanded focus on Hyflex teaching modalities to better accommodate diverse student needs.

Course Proposal Process

This session will discuss suggestions for developing new course proposals and navigating the approval processes. Bob Blankenberger, Professor of Public Administration, will discuss developing student learning outcomes, alignment to program and university outcomes, environmental scanning, alignment to external entities such as accreditors and IAI, filling out new curse approval forms and navigating the levels of governance. Examples and tips from audience members are welcome.

Data analysis insight charts provide a framework for in-depth and systematic assessment of student learning on a classroom-wide scale, acting as a useful tool for data-driven pedagogical reflection. In this session, Dr. Stephanie Hedge, Associate Professor of English and Modern Languages, shares information about data analysis insight charts, how to effectively pair them with course grading, and her personal experiences using them to support reflection and analysis of her classes during the ACUE Effective Teaching Practices course. Come learn more about data-driven reflection and how it can impact your teaching!

Dr. Hedge’s talk is the first in our series led by graduates of the Association of College and University Educator’s Effective Teaching Practices Course.

Suyang Yu, Assistant Professor in the School of Public Management and Policy, will lead this session. She will share her expertise on creating an inclusive classroom, specifically for in-person settings. Leveraging insights from her teaching effectiveness certification and her personal teaching practice, Dr. Yu will explain how employing ice-breaking activities, group discussions, and scenario analysis can help establish an inclusive environment starting on the first day of class.

Professor Yu’s talk is the third in our series led by graduates of the Association of College and University Educator’s Effective Teaching Practices Course.

Developing Self-Directed Learners: Exploring Self-Directed Learning Dynamics in Accounting

Ahmad Jumah, Professor of Accounting, will discuss the strategies he employs to develop his students into self-directed learners—those who can plan, monitor, and adjust their learning processes on their own. These include:

Structured assignments, project flowcharts, and work plans;
Self-assessment tools, such as rubrics, peer reviews, and exam wrappers;
Continuous learning practices, such as iterative feedback and Qualitative Incident Questionnaires.

Professor Jumah’s talk is the second in our series led by graduates of the Association of College and University Educator’s Effective Teaching Practices Course.
