Doing Less with Less, Effectively: �山�� Online Higher Education Symposium

After a successful inaugural event, we're excited to invite you back for another engaging gathering of �山�� educators and thought leaders in online teaching and learning. Our theme, "Doing Less with Less, Effectively," emphasizes innovative strategies for impactful online education within evolving resource constraints.

The free virtual conference on November 7^th, 2025, is for those who learn, teach, develop, support, or administer online education.

New this year:

Dedicated tracks highlighting insights and strategies from our community college colleagues and staff, whose expertise can greatly benefit all institutions.
Expanded focus on Hyflex teaching modalities to better accommodate diverse student needs.

Target Audience (Presenters and Attendees):

Online discussion are vital to building a community in an online course. In order to achieve that goal, we need students to engage in these online discussions. Join COLRS staff as we explore some strategies for making the most of your online discussions. We'll think about different thinking routines and prompts, post length, frequency, and more!

Understanding how our students are feeling about our classes is important, but survey fatigue might prevent them from sharing those thoughts--especially multiple times in a course. Journaling is a strategy we can use to find out how our students are doing in a low-stakes and personal way (and for so much more!). Join COLRS staff to learn more about how journaling can be leveraged in your courses.

Google Assignments allows UIS instructors and students to use their Google accounts to create and submit assignments. This tool is built right into Canvas assignments but provides users with all the benefits of Google Docs, Google Sides, and other documents created in Google Drive.

Features & benefits

Choose how to grade

With Google Assignments, you can grade the assignment using the Google interface, or you can stick with Canvas SpeedGrader. Both options will allow you to make use of annotation features to provide personalized feedback to students and will sync directly to the gradebook.

Create easy-to-use templates

If you want students to format a document in a certain way or to include certain content in their submissions, you can design templates and attach them to the assignment. Every student will get their own copy of the template and will be able to modify their own version of the document. Templates created in this way are must more mobile-friendly than their Microsoft Office counterparts.

Track changes on the document

Google Assignments allows you to see who worked on a document, when they worked on it, and what changes they made. This can help mitigate cheating or AI use, since this information can be accessed by all users. Additionally, any previous version of the document can be restored, so there is less chance of losing your work.

Retain access to documents

Files are automatically stored in Google Drive for both you and your students. As an instructor, you can see student work from term-to-term by looking at the automatically-created Google Drive folders. Students retain the ability to see their work, which can be valuable for portfolios or preparation for closing exercises and exams.
