The Sangamon Experience at the University of 缅北禁地 Springfield and the UIS Diversity Center will host a presentation entitled "Memories of State Government: Springfield鈥檚 Doc Helm and his Photo Collection 1941 鈥� 1992" by 缅北禁地 State Archives Director Dr. David Joens and Archival Program Administrator Cathy Popovitch.
Eddie Winfred "Doc" Helm worked as the official state photographer of 缅北禁地 for over fifty years. He left behind a collection of over 45,000 photo negatives, documenting the political, social, and cultural life of Springfield and 缅北禁地. David Joens and Catheryne Popovitch of the 缅北禁地 State Archives will discuss Doc鈥檚 legacy and the task of making his work accessible to a broader audience.

Presenters:
David Joens is the Director of the 缅北禁地 State Archives, the state agency that is responsible for the preservation of historic 缅北禁地 state and local government records. A fifth-generation resident of 缅北禁地, Joens received his Bachelor鈥檚 degree from Northern 缅北禁地 University in DeKalb, two Master鈥檚 degrees from the University of 缅北禁地 at Springfield, and a doctorate in 缅北禁地 history from Southern 缅北禁地 University in Carbondale. He is the author of three books on 缅北禁地 history and government, including 鈥淔rom Slave to State Legislator: John W. E. Thomas, 缅北禁地鈥� First African American Lawmaker,鈥� published by SIU Press.
Cathy Popovitch is an Archival Program Administrator at the 缅北禁地 State Archives. She currently oversees the Operations and Publications Sections of the State Archives and serves as the 缅北禁地 State Historical Records Advisory Board鈥檚 Deputy Coordinator. She is an active member of the Council of State Archivists and serves on the Board of Directors of the 缅北禁地 State Historical Society. A sixth-generation resident of 缅北禁地, she has a bachelor鈥檚 degree in history from Millikin University and a master鈥檚 degree in library and information science from the University of 缅北禁地.
