It symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Families clean and decorate their homes, perform worship (puja) to Goddess Lakshmi (the deity of wealth and prosperity), exchange gifts and an abundance of traditional sweets, wear new clothes, and celebrate with fireworks, marking a time of new beginnings and a renewed hope for prosperity in the coming year.
