UIS Center for Lincoln Studies director’s book named a finalist for 2024 ASALH Book Prize
University of Ăĺ±±˝űµŘ Springfield Center for Lincoln Studies Director Jacob K. Friefeld’s book, “The First Migrants: How Black Homesteaders’ Quest for Land and Freedom Heralded America’s Great Migration,” co-authored with Richard Edwards, has been selected as a finalist for the 2024 Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) Book Prize.
Friefeld previously served as an Ăĺ±±˝űµŘ and Midwest studies research historian at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield before coming to UIS.

On Tuesday evening, Jan. 30, I will be co-hosting an information session for students with the Student Government Association, and I hope you can attend. The session will include brief UIS updates from me and SGA President Emmanuelle Yakana, and we will have several members of the UIS leadership team present to address student questions. Areas represented will include Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Enrollment and Facilities/Services.
